The Gaming Giant Brings Onboard Popular Battle Royale Producer to Boost Troubled Action Game Ambitious Title
The renowned publisher has appointed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to lead the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the upcoming third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.
Leadership Shift Follows Lukewarm Response
Brinkman steps into the role of studio head at 31st Union following the exit of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' underwhelming early showing last fall.
Recently, 2K president David Ismailer notified team members about this strategic move through an internal memo, which stressed that early feedback sessions had indicated the requirement for a more defined direction.
Ismailer noted that the developers is now overhauling the project with a renewed focus, aiming to satisfy gamer demands.
Trend of Strategic Acquisitions
This announcement mirrors a similar action taken by the publisher in the summer, when they brought on Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to assist with the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.
Below is the entire content from the president's memo:
Hello Everyone—
I understand you all just finished your town hall - I trust you’re as thrilled as I am with the recent updates. Last time I sent you all a message, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most dedicated and innovative developers we have had the pleasure to work with - and we’re excited for that relationship to endure.”
Given your hard work and adaptability, particularly over the last year, you continue to prove that.
The gamer responses from last fall’s Project ETHOS playtest was enlightening. It validated the appeal of a action-packed game but made clear we still had refinements needed. It highlighted the need for a more distinct vision.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve progressed. You took the criticism to heart and overhauled the title with a refreshed goal - one that’s poised to deliver on its promise to our players.
The trust in Project ETHOS increases every day. To boost the incredible development you’ve made, It is a pleasure to introduce Ben Brinkman as the new Studio Head of the team. Following several months of discussions, he officially joins us on the specified date.
Ben’s leadership and background in the PVP shooter genre is extensive, having spent the past decade and a half producing and managing some of the most recognizable titles in the industry, for example Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, Apex Legends.
Please join me in receiving him in the coming days. We are all excited to persist witnessing the evolution of Project ETHOS in the weeks to follow.
David
